This lovely old tree you see here in the photo from Websteria at Flickr was estimated to be over 700 years old and had been diseased but the Forestry Dept had decided to leave it alone and let nature take its course and it did Sunday. After all those years the 100+ winds that hit the Oregon Coast blew it down.It makes me proud to be Oregonian because when the new of its demise was brodcasted on all our tv stations here people sent in memories and photos of this beloved tree in a state full of people who love nature.
I would ask your thoughts and good wishes for all the people on the Oregon Coast who are without electricity and are experiencing flooding.The little town of Vernonia about an hour north of here is completed surrounded by water and had to be evacuated by the National Guard. I -5 is closed due flooding between Portland and Seatlle.My hubby had to go down yesterday to a local nursing home to help them evacuate due to flooding.
In other news I have found an online radio station from the other Portland. Portland , Maine that is who is playing Christmas music 24/7 between now and X-mas. It is WHOM-94.9.
Here is a recipe From the Deen Bro's Cookbook that sounds so good that I am going to try it soon.This is a wonderful cookbook that I highly recommend.
Mango Coconut Rice
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 1/2 long grain rice
1 14-ounce can of unsweented coconut milk
2/3 cup water
1 tsp salt
1 large ripe mango,peeled and cubed
In large saucepan, heat the oil over medium -high heat. Add rice and stir to coat with the oil. Add the coconut milk,water and salt;bring to boil.Stir in the mango. Cover and reduce heat to low and simmer for 20minor until the liquid is absorbed.
Remove the rice from the heat and fluff it with a fork. Place a clean,dry dish towelover the pan,cover with the lid, and let steam for 5 min before serving.
Serves 6

having just moved from Seattle a few months ago, I know what the weather can do out there...my thoughts have been and will be with all those who have suffered and are still suffering with this latest storm.

I'm sorry to hear about the tree too, but so much better that nature took it than reading it was cut down to make toothpicks. :)

I was sad that tree blew down. It was a sight to behold when it was still standing. We go to Vernonia each Feb for my oldest daughter's tae kwon do tournament, so I was shocked to hear about everyone being evacuated. My husband got back home from the coast just in time to miss the weather...9:00pm on Saturday night, otherwise he would probably still be out there. We got lucky here in town that we didn't get hit too badly.
That recipe looks delicious.
I am amazed at how powerful the storm was everywhere. We got a foot of snow while you had winds and rain. My brother in Eugene was glad he had a house with a solid foundation!
I'm glad that nature was the end of this mighty tree, not man.
My thoughts are with all of you suffering extremes of weather out there just now.
