End of Summer

I love each season for what it has to give and as summer comes to a close I am enjoying the approaching arrival of fall.

The last weekend in August we went up to Bend which is about a 140 miles or so from here it is just on the east side of the Cascades in the high desert. That is South Sister in the photo and Sparks lake.It is ruggedly beautiful country up there. I have many photos to share with you from this trip. This photo here is by RA Jensen who is a great photographer of this area.We also visited Clear Lake and Crater Lake during this trip. It is so beautiful up in the Cascades and High Desert and so different from here in the Valley which is equally beautiful.

This past Monday we went to the Oregon State Fair. I always enjoy it because it is like the fairs you imagine from the past. It is always clean, filled with agricultural things, good food and crafts. It is nothing like the fairs back south had become in places like Memphis where you were almost afraid to go to them for fear of your life at certain times of the day and night. It was the perfect 70 degree weather and gorgeous.

I am also eagerly anticipating the end of the week as my sister is going to be induced Friday in Nashville and I will hopefully have a new nephew or neice. She chose to not find out till the end. I am going back in November to see them.

I have finished Rush Home Road by Lori Lansens recently and throughly enjoyed this book. It is a book that speaks to your heart without being sappy. I am now reading Tallgrass by Sandra Dallas it is about the internment camps during WWII.I have long been fascinated by this period in history .

In September I have these on my list to read:
Monique and the Mango Rains-Kris Hollaway

The Diplomats Wife-Pam Jenoff

Dream When Your'e Feeling Blue-Elizbeth Berg

The Condition-Jennifer Haigh

Breaking Dawn-Stephanie Meyer

Good to hear from you, Yolanda! Thanks for your kind words on my blog.

I love fairs! The Minnesota and New Mexico state fairs were always great events for my family. This year my husband and his friend have entered some of their home-brewed beers in the local (county) fair -- we find out this Friday if they won anything.

Our country fairs are coming up, too. Lots of fun and color--and, oh, the aromas!

That's a beautiful photo.

I wish I had read as much as you did this summer.

I enjoy your comments. Now it's my turn. Regarding: "That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest.— Henry David Thoreau"

My husband occasionally reminds me that the best hedge against future uncertainty is the ability to live simply. In this economy, it is good to heed this wisdom.

Hi Yolanda -
We drove by the South Sister and Sparks Lake yesterday on our way home from Crane Prairie. I have some wonderful pictures of the South Sister from our campsite. Can't wait to see more of yours. I love Central Oregon - there is so much to see. It's so different from the Valley and I love them both.

Your photos are beautiful! Our county fair was in August and, living in rural Pennsylvania, we have friends who spend the week at the fair with their livestock. I also enjoyed your comments.

Thanks for visiting my site, and wow, what a beautiful photo.

I used to hate fall because it meant the end of summer and the beginning of school. Now that I am older, I still hate saying goodbye to summer but I do look forward to cooler days and nights, the beautiful colors--and scents-- of the leaves and the hope that comes with the harvest of corn, apples, soybeans, etc. (at least that's what we harvest here).

Great picture.

Lovely picture. I, too, am enjoying these first days of September, although our scenery in London is a lot less rugged! I love this time of changing seasons.

Nothing better than driving down 97 on a clear day. You can really see all the Cascade peaks!

Hi Yolanda,
I love the Oregon State Fair too! I used to be a vendor there. I worked with the Pioneer Village as the spinner the years it was part of the fair.

Bend and Sisters are great places to visit. My friend owns a log cabin near Redmond and we would go there for a few days, just the two of us and walk on the trails along the river, stay up late and eat chocolate and watch movies

That’s such a beautiful area of the country! It’s nice knowing what you’ve been up to lately and love the Thoreau quote. I've been experimenting with Photoshop at Sacred Ruminations recently ... very 'kewl' and fun.
Hugs and blessings,

The picture is amazing! I haven't been to a fair in a long long time. But I always enjoyed them.

Thanks for the reading list-sounds like some good books. Which I'm always looking for!

Greetings....I linked to your blog, via 3 or 4 other blogs (couldn't "backtrack" now, if I tried)...and when your page popped up, I nearly jumped off of my chair! It was a photograph of my birthplace! I was born in Bend, Oregon! The photo brought tears to my eyes, and filled me with a kind of melancholy. Kind of "serendipitous", and I think it's going to be fun, dropping by to visit, now and then.

The next time you head over towards Bend or Sisters, and you'd like someone to "show you around", I will put you in touch w/my 81 yr old Dad, who is well known in those parts, and is a "self-made naturalist". It would make for a memory you would never forget, as he is a lover of all God's creatures, including the 2-legged kind. :)

Blessings to you to and yours.
