Parts of My Youth

First I would love to THANK Lissa for my new blog header. I encourage you to go to her blog and check it out.She is a gifted writer and graphic designer and such a sweet person. I so thank her for wonderful work she did here. She is truly gifted.
This week has seen the passing of many of the icons of my youth bringing home with great detail the fact that I am getting older.
I remember growing up we lived out in the country and had an antenna and we could only get two channels on TV (PBS and NBC) and maybe on a good day CBS.In those days a lot of your TV viewing depended on the weather and I spent many evenings going out to turn the antenna while someone would yell if the picture was clear inside.
I loved to watch Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon was one of the highlights of the show. I loved the banter between the two and watching Carson only made my West Coast yearnings grow. I was so sad when Leno took over and I don't think the show has been the same since.
It was also so sad to hear of Farrah Fawcett'spassing. She struggled so valiantly with the anal cancer and I so admire her for the documentary she did. I remember when Charlies Angels was popular I wanted to have her hair and be as beautiful as she was.She was a true Steel Magnolia and even to the very end she lived with grace .
Yesterday I had been out helping my husband do stretcher trips for the medical transport company he works for and then tocome home and hear the shocking news of Michael Jackson's death. I truly believe he was a gifted performer and my heart goes out to his children.
I will send along my prayers to all these families and loved ones.I thank them all for making me life richer for their body work .

Hi! Thanks for commenting on my blog. I just spent the last 10 minutes reading your newly discovered blog and I must tell you that I found it very interesting and inspiring. I will be back. As for the three icons you mentioned...they were all big in my life when I was younger. It is hard to believe they are gone.

I loved the story of you outside adjusting the antenna, while someone inside yelled to let you know when the picture was good. Those were the days...and the passing of these three icons seems to signal the end of an era. I thought I was going to marry Michael! ;)

Three icons indeed that touched the lives of many...my memories are similar to yours. The quote you are sharing pretty much sums it up. They will be missed by many.

Dear Yolanda,

I've come around for a visit -- I am so sporatic at this blogging thing, but when I come I am open of heart and cheerful of face -- I find the same in you . . . it is a wonderful place to come to.

You have captured a moment of reverence for so many lives on this blog. I was especially moved by Anita's recognition and the acknowledgement that a super star and a smiling face give the same gift to those around.

I am also enthusiatically joining you in the positive gossip practice. I have been hurt by gossip and have participated when I know better . . . : ( I have actually closed the door on some relationships because the gossip germ pervades each conversation. "Building up" is as God would have it. It's the best way to live.

I always love a brief respite in your perfectly imperfect place -- I feel so at home as we share so many heart-thoughts. (I have been working on a post entitled "Perfectly Imperfect" for my blog. I love all that it implies and that is a healthy thing for a perfectionist like me who makes herself miserable at times trying to fix every last detail.)

Must be off for now . . . but I'll return again soon (I hope).

XO ~~ Debbie

It has been a difficult week for famous people. I'm still rather sad about Farrah Fawcett, especially. I wanted her hair too and I even cut mine to look like hers--at least I tried to.

Oh the good old days...a few channels, poor reception, rabbit ears, antenna's...the youth of today have NO idea!!

Yes, this was part of my childhood too...it seems like part of us goes along with these people. Even though we didn't know them personally, they were in our homes and we did "know" them.

I love this quote by the way!

These were icons from my youth. Ed and Farrah were class acts, to be sure. Genuine people.

I was never allowed to watch CA because it came on after 9! Ah, the mystery and wonder and good stuff of Then.

Hello new friend,

I'm glad you dropped in as it allowed me a path for this return visit.

I see you're from the PAC NW. Me too! I live in AZ now (since 2000), but grew up & raised my family in Tacoma, University Place, Puyallup. I visit there still, and often.

Be blessed,
Kathleen

I was shocked about Michael Jackson, too. Only 50 -- I'm 46, so you know how close to home that hits. He was an odd duck, and I can't help wonder about how much he suffered in his life. I pray that his children land in the most loving place possible.

the loss of people always gives us reason to pause. Not only these three but I have recently lost two old friends. For me it is the age we are at. For Ed and my friends it perhaps was time. For Farrah and Michael it was much too soon.

It is always strange when celebrities die, because you feel like you know them and yet you really don't. Amazing how people that are so familiar in your life are complete strangers in many ways. I'm glad you chose the picture of Michael when he was a sweet, talented kid.

I too am reminded of time passing.. I am the same age as Michael Jackson... his death made me sad.. even though he was a rather 'weird' person.
And I loved Farrah.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I am glad that it has given me the opportunity to be introduced to yours - we seem to share many of the same passions.

Thanks for sharing this images and stories of these people who have been icons and for many reasons - a part of our lives that brought us joy or laughter and reminds us of our own good times and fun moments.

I will be back soon for a visit....
